Meetup Austin Software - Employability: what is it and why should it be important?
Aug 17, 2022 (60 minutes)
In this talk I explore how employability has become a key competence for all professionals in today's technology-driven world; I discuss what employability is and why it is important to consciously develop it. In addition, we talk about how a strong and well-defined personal brand can showcase one's employability and can be used as a strategic tool to stand out in a competitive job market.
I think that professionals need to add certain conditions in order to make someone employable. First, I think you should think about "how I sell what I have," which means how you show off your skills and abilities. Then, I think it's important to think about "how I will build on what I have" and keep making it better. Lastly, I stress how important it is to think about my life circumstances, because all of these things together will make me employable.
During my presentation, I stressed how important it is to have not only technical knowledge but also a broad understanding of the industry, including knowledge of different countries' cultures, fluency in different languages (especially English as a common language), strong communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to be flexible at work.
Through my own experience, I've learned that each of these traits is something that can be developed and improved over time, and that it's important to keep studying and getting stronger in order to stay employable.
